A cabinet-type steel cart is a mobile structure, not a storage cabinet with casters added at the end. The load path runs from shelves and drawers through the cabinet shell or frame, into caster plates and finally into the floor. If any interface is underdefined, the result can rack, roll poorly or become unstable when a loaded drawer opens.
This guide focuses on the information an OEM should send to a sheet metal supplier. Final stability, ergonomic and workplace-safety validation remains the equipment owner’s responsibility.
Define the Operating Load
Start with a load map rather than one total capacity:
- payload per drawer or shelf
- maximum total payload
- center of gravity in normal use
- load with the heaviest drawer fully extended
- push or tow method
- floor gaps, thresholds and slopes
- indoor, washdown, chemical or outdoor environment
- stationary use on leveling feet or continuous mobile use
The same total load can require different construction when it is distributed across six drawers, concentrated on a top shelf or carried over uneven floors.
Shell Construction or Welded Frame
A folded monocoque shell can be efficient for lighter, repeatable carts. A welded tube or formed-channel frame provides clearer load paths for heavier modules and towing interfaces. Hybrid designs use a reinforced base with formed skins and drawer supports.
Choose based on:
| Design factor | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Payload | Where are concentrated loads introduced? |
| Volume | Does tooling or fixture investment make sense? |
| Access | Can internal welds, fasteners and slides be installed? |
| Finish | Can pretreatment reach seams and drain afterward? |
| Service | Are damaged panels or casters replaceable? |
| Shipping | Is the cart shipped assembled or knocked down? |
Do not add reinforcement everywhere. Use beads, returns and local channels where loads enter the structure, then validate the assembly under the specified case.
Drawer Safety and Retention
Drawer slides need controlled mounting datums. A small spacing error can create binding, inconsistent latch engagement or front-panel misalignment. Define:
- slide model and installation width
- extension length and rated load
- drawer pull and latch interface
- retention during transport
- one-drawer-at-a-time interlock, if required
- closed-position gap and cosmetic alignment
- removal and service procedure
An anti-tip feature is a system function. A heavier base does not replace testing with the actual drawer loads and floor conditions.
Caster and Handle Interfaces
The caster supplier’s load rating is only one input. Wheel material, diameter, swivel offset, brake type and floor condition affect rolling force and stability. Provide the exact caster model or an approved interface drawing.
Caster plates should:
- keep fastener access clear
- spread load into the base structure
- preserve wheel swivel clearance
- include repeatable hole location
- protect threads and bearing surfaces during coating
Locate handles so the operator can push without striking drawer pulls or contacting sharp edges. Define handle load cases and attachment method. The OEM should evaluate ergonomic push force with the completed cart and expected payload.
Material and Finish
Cold-rolled steel with powder coating is common for indoor carts. Zinc-coated sheet, stainless steel or a different coating system may be appropriate for wet or chemical exposure. Specify the environment, cleaning method and cosmetic zones.
Useful finish notes include:
- pretreatment and coating family
- color and gloss
- dry film thickness range
- masking for slide, grounding and threaded areas
- edge and weld appearance
- corrosion-test requirement, when contractually applicable
Avoid placing close-tolerance slides on thick coating without masking or allowance.
Inspection Plan
Measure what affects operation:
- base flatness and caster-plate coplanarity
- frame or shell squareness
- slide spacing and parallelism
- drawer travel, latch and interlock function
- door and drawer gaps
- handle and accessory interface location
- fastener torque where specified
- static load, mobility and stability tests owned by the product plan
