An enclosure can remain closed and still develop condensation. If an internal surface becomes cold enough relative to the moisture in the enclosed air, water can form without rain entering through a hole. That is why “make it waterproof” is not an adequate environmental specification for an edge computer.
Before buying the industrial computer enclosure, describe where and how the equipment operates. The metalwork design can provide interfaces for the selected environmental-control approach, but a shell alone does not establish moisture performance.
Describe transitions as well as steady conditions
Record expected temperature and humidity ranges, installation orientation and exposure to outdoor air, washdown or nearby processes. Include shutdown periods, cold storage, transport and the transition into a warmer environment. Equipment may face its most difficult condition when it is not operating.
Rittal’s explanation of moisture in enclosures discusses condensation as a consequence of environmental conditions. This is a useful distinction when a purchasing requirement only mentions enclosure sealing.
Do not confuse a desired rating with a test result. If an IP classification or environmental qualification is required, state the exact assembly configuration and validation responsibility in the RFQ.
| Situation | Information to provide | Design question |
|---|---|---|
| Cold start or storage | Storage and startup temperature, humidity and timing | Can internal surfaces cross the relevant dew-point condition? |
| Door or cover opening | Service frequency and surrounding environment | How is moisture introduced during access? |
| Cable entry | Glands, routing, orientation and support | Are all entry interfaces defined in the final assembly? |
| Active moisture control | Selected components and control strategy | Who supplies, installs and validates the complete arrangement? |

Choose measures through the equipment design
Possible measures depend on the installation and may include controlled heating, environmental conditioning, approved vents or other moisture-management components. These options have their own ratings, placement requirements and operating limits.
Do not add an arbitrary drain hole or generic vent to a released enclosure. An opening can alter ingress protection, contamination control, thermal behavior or safety requirements. The responsible engineer should approve the complete arrangement and the applicable tests.
A fabricated bracket for a heater is a mechanical deliverable. Selecting the heater, its control, electrical protection and safe placement is a separate responsibility unless explicitly included in the project scope.
Define all penetrations and removable joints
Include cable glands, entry plates, connectors, covers and mounting penetrations in the assembly review. Identify the gasket or sealing component and its installation condition. An otherwise controlled enclosure can have an undefined interface where a cable variant was added late.
Use the same discipline for replacement parts. A service plate with a different finish or gasket arrangement should not be assumed equivalent simply because its screw holes align. See the replaceable cable-entry plate guide for managing shared interfaces and variants.

Review installation and service access
Mounting position can influence exposure and cable routing. Show the enclosure relative to floors, process equipment, walls and service space. Avoid relying on a product photograph to communicate the installed condition.
Describe who opens the enclosure and under what conditions. If maintenance introduces humid or contaminated air, the equipment procedure may need controls beyond the fabricated shell. Service access also needs room to inspect or replace the selected environmental-control components.

Separate manufacturing acceptance from qualification
A metalwork inspection can verify the released dimensions, sealing lands, finish, hardware and agreed assembly details. It cannot by itself prove that the populated computer will remain free of condensation throughout its operating life.
Define qualification conditions with the responsible equipment team, including the assembled state, exposure profile and acceptance criteria. If a supplier is asked to support testing, quote that activity explicitly. This keeps procurement focused on a reproducible enclosure package while preserving the environmental evidence the final system actually requires.
