A filter frame is a small part of an industrial computer enclosure, but it connects several different requirements: airflow, contamination control, service access and retention. Treating it as a rectangular hole with a cover can leave important decisions unresolved until the equipment is assembled.
The frame drawing should define the mechanical interface around the selected filter, not claim a filtration or enclosure rating on its own. For an OEM industrial computer enclosure, agree the filter system first, then release the metalwork that supports it.
Identify the filter and its operating assumptions
Specify the media or complete filter assembly, dimensions, orientation and approved replacement part. The thermal design team should account for the selected filter and its maintenance condition when evaluating the cooling arrangement.
Rittal’s guidance on enclosure climate-control filters emphasizes selection and maintenance. It does not establish that any generic pad will work with a custom enclosure. A visually similar replacement can have a different airflow or contamination-control behavior.
Separate the filter’s requirements from those of the surrounding enclosure. A filter pad alone does not assign an IP rating to the complete computer housing.
| Interface | Drawing or BOM input | Inspection question |
|---|---|---|
| Filter seating | Selected media, support plate and contact perimeter | Is the intended element retained in the released position? |
| Bypass control | Gasket or seal geometry and assembly condition | Are the specified contact surfaces continuous? |
| Retention | Captive hardware, latches or guided carrier | Can the frame be secured without damaging the media? |
| Service | Extraction direction and clearance | Can the filter be changed in the actual installation? |

Make the seating and bypass path explicit
Show where the filter rests, what supports it and how the perimeter is controlled. If a gasket is used, define the specified component and the assembled condition. A frame that closes at its corners may still leave an uncontrolled path along a bowed edge.
Include the finish and any relevant flatness requirements at the seating surface. Avoid tightening the entire enclosure’s tolerance because one contact land matters. Identify the functional zone and agree a practical measurement method for it.
If the design includes a perforated support, review its location against the filter element and the intended airflow direction. The frame must not damage the media during assembly or removal.
Review replacement with the enclosure installed
The CAD model should include the wall, adjacent machine structure and cable paths that exist in service. A filter carrier that slides out on a bench may be trapped after the enclosure is mounted.
Define the required service envelope and whether tools are needed. Captive fasteners can reduce loose-hardware handling, but they still need access and a controlled retention arrangement. Consider where the removed cover or carrier rests during the operation.

Control variants and replacement parts
If an enclosure family uses several filters, distinguish the assemblies in the BOM and service instructions. Do not rely solely on outside dimensions to prevent the wrong element from being installed.
A change in media, support mesh, gasket or perforated plate can affect the complete system. Use the equipment team’s change-review process rather than accepting substitutions only because they fit the carrier. The supplier’s manufacturing role is to preserve the released mechanical configuration.
During procurement, clarify whether DRAmetal supplies the fabricated frame only, installs buyer-specified components or delivers an agreed mechanical kit. Filter selection and system thermal validation should have explicit owners.

Inspect the mechanical requirements without overclaiming
An acceptance plan can cover the frame envelope, mounting pattern, seating land, hardware and replacement access using an agreed mating reference. It should identify the finish and restraint state used for measurement.
Airflow, filtration and complete-enclosure environmental performance require the corresponding system-level evaluation. Connect those requirements to the fan-cooled enclosure design so that purchasing does not mistake a successful frame fit check for evidence of cooling performance. A clear boundary makes both the quote and the eventual validation easier to manage.
