Comparing Medical Sheet Metal Quotations Beyond Unit Price

Compare medical sheet metal quotations by delivered scope, tooling, finish, inspection, packaging and change terms before selecting an OEM supplier.

Comparing Medical Sheet Metal Quotations Beyond Unit Price

The lowest unit price can be a useful quote—or a different product scope. One supplier may price a complete inspected housing kit while another prices only formed metalwork. Comparing the totals before resolving that difference creates a misleading purchasing decision.

For a medical equipment program, normalize the quotations around the same released configuration and delivery condition.

Build one scope sheet

List what the supplier must deliver and what the OEM will provide. Identify the drawing and BOM revisions, included hardware, assembly operations, finish, inspection records and packaging. Use the same sheet for each bidder.

Comparison lineQuestion to resolve
MetalworkAre every cover, bracket and tray included?
Bought-out hardwareIncluded, customer-supplied or excluded?
AssemblyLoose parts, partial assembly or complete mechanical kit?
FinishWhich surfaces, masking and cosmetic acceptance?
InspectionRoutine checks, first article and special records?
PackagingBulk separation, protected individual packs or line-side kits?
LogisticsWhat delivery terms and shipment assumptions apply?

Record exclusions in the comparison, not in a separate email that the decision maker never sees.

Separate recurring and non-recurring costs

Tooling, fixtures, samples and engineering setup may be priced separately or included in an order. Ask which charges recur, who owns any paid tooling and what happens when the drawing changes.

Use a consistent commercial scenario. For example, compare the same pilot quantity and the same proposed repeat quantity, but do not treat an uncommitted annual forecast as an ordered volume.

A planning calculation can clarify the issue. A quote of 40 units at 80 currency units each plus a 600-unit setup charge totals 3,800. A quote of 40 at 90 with no separate setup totals 3,600. This arithmetic does not choose the supplier: scope, later-order pricing and technical acceptance still matter. The figures are hypothetical, not DRAmetal prices.

Compare the cost of receiving the required condition

A cheaper loose-parts quotation may shift hardware installation, fit checking and protective packaging to the OEM. That can be a reasonable choice if the responsibility is intentional.

Likewise, a quotation including a report is only comparable when the report’s scope is defined. “Inspection included” does not tell you which characteristics are measured, which records are supplied or whether mating-interface verification is included.

Ask how exceptions are handled

Clarify material substitutions, approved deviations, sample approval and changes after release. A supplier who flags an unbuildable detail before quoting is providing useful information; do not erase that exception simply to make a comparison table look tidy.

Discuss the commercial treatment of work already in progress when an engineering change is issued. Relevant costs depend on the actual stage and contract, not a universal percentage.

For a practical release workflow, see engineering change cost categories.

Evaluate schedule assumptions without inventing certainty

Lead-time statements should identify their starting conditions: released drawings, approved sample, material availability or another agreed trigger. Separate proposed fabrication timing from transit and customer approval time.

Do not compare a quotation based on an approved design with one that still includes unresolved engineering questions. Ask both suppliers to state what could change the commitment.

Make the decision traceable

Use a comparison that shows normalized scope, unresolved exceptions, total proposed cost and the evidence still needed. Procurement can then discuss price without losing the engineering requirements.

DRAmetal can review medical housing components and medical equipment chassis against a defined RFQ package. The goal is a quotation you can release and inspect against, rather than a low number that needs to be rebuilt after ordering.
