Solar Mounting Sheet Metal Fabrication: OEM RFQ Guide

Solar mounting sheet metal RFQ for brackets, rails and supports: loads, materials, corrosion, holes, bonding, inspection and certification scope.

Solar mounting parts look simple because many are rails, clips, brackets and formed supports. In service they transfer wind, snow, dead load and installation loads while exposed to water, UV, temperature cycles and dissimilar materials. Their holes and clamp surfaces can also be part of the module retention and bonding system.

A sheet metal or extrusion supplier can manufacture released parts and provide agreed inspection records. The racking-system owner remains responsible for structural design, module compatibility, grounding and certification.

Define the Mounting System and Load Inputs

The RFQ should identify:

  • rooftop, ground-mount, canopy or tracker application
  • module and clamp interfaces
  • design loads and load combinations
  • span and support conditions
  • roof or foundation attachment
  • installation torque and tool access
  • thermal movement strategy
  • target market and certification route

Do not ask the fabricator to derive bracket thickness from a project location alone. Provide the approved structural calculation inputs and released geometry.

Material Selection

Common options include:

Aluminum

Aluminum offers low mass and corrosion resistance, but alloy, temper, extrusion or sheet form, coating and galvanic interfaces need control. Tight bends in harder tempers require supplier review.

Zinc-coated carbon steel

Coated steel can provide efficient formed supports. Cut edges, punched holes, welded areas and coating repair must match the corrosion plan.

Stainless steel

Stainless is used for clips, fasteners and high-exposure components. Grade selection depends on the actual environment, and contact with aluminum or coated steel needs galvanic review.

The drawing should name the material specification and condition. “Aluminum” and “galvanized steel” are not complete purchasing descriptions.

Corrosion and Dissimilar-Metal Interfaces

Water can remain at overlaps, clamp zones and roof interfaces. Improve durability through:

  • drainage and open sections
  • avoiding uncontrolled crevices
  • compatible fasteners and isolation where required
  • coating continuity
  • accessible inspection points
  • controlled field-cut and repair instructions

Salt exposure, industrial pollution and roof runoff can change the risk. Provide site environment and intended service life to the system engineer.

Hole, Slot and Clamp-Surface Control

Solar parts often rely on slotted adjustment. Excess clearance can reduce bearing area or change clamp travel. Too little clearance creates field fit problems.

Control:

  • hole and slot size
  • edge distance
  • burr direction and edge condition
  • formed angle and springback
  • clamp contact flatness
  • rail or bracket straightness
  • coating thickness at mating features

Use functional gauges for repeated interfaces when they provide a clearer production check than a long list of independent dimensions.

Bonding and Grounding Scope

UL Solutions explains that UL 2703 covers mounting systems, mounting and clamping devices, and ground lugs for flat-plate PV modules and panels, including grounding and bonding considerations. Certification applies to the evaluated system and component combination.

The component fabricator should receive:

  • controlled bonding feature geometry
  • material and coating restrictions at contact points
  • approved fastener or washer
  • assembly torque
  • marking and traceability requirements
  • prohibited substitutions

A visually similar bracket is not automatically interchangeable in a certified system.

Forming and Joining

Review:

  • inside bend radius and grain direction
  • coating condition before and after forming
  • weld procedure and corrosion repair
  • extrusion-to-sheet interfaces
  • tool marks on clamp surfaces
  • batch fixture and gauge plan

For high-strength or wear-resistant steels, use producer forming guidance. For aluminum, confirm alloy and temper before freezing tight bends.

Inspection and Documentation

An OEM inspection plan may include:

  1. material certificate and coating designation
  2. profile or sheet thickness
  3. hole, slot and edge distance
  4. formed angle and interface position
  5. clamp-surface flatness
  6. finish and coating
  7. bonding feature geometry
  8. lot identity and packaging labels
  9. functional fit gauge
  10. periodic mechanical or corrosion tests owned by the product plan

RFQ Checklist

Send approved part and assembly drawings, structural loads, module and roof interfaces, exact materials, finish, fasteners, bonding details, certification-controlled features, inspection plan, packaging, forecast volume and substitution rules.

See our solar mounting fabrication page and new energy industry capability, or send the released component package.

Certification Source

Certification and structural approval belong to the complete evaluated system, not an unevaluated loose metal part.
