Stainless Grain Direction and Roughness: Separate Drawing Notes

Specify stainless equipment panels with separate grain direction, measured surface texture, cosmetic zones and final inspection requirements for OEM supply.

Stainless Grain Direction and Roughness: Separate Drawing Notes

Two stainless panels can both be called “brushed” and still look different when assembled. Their grain can run in different directions, the transition at a bent return can differ, or a blended weld can interrupt the visible pattern. A roughness value alone does not describe those appearance relationships.

For medical equipment OEMs, the drawing should separate surface texture from cosmetic appearance and manufacturing direction. This article addresses that drawing handoff for stainless sheet metal panels and covers. The existing stainless finish guide explains finish designations; this is not another catalog of finish names.

Give the visible grain a reference direction

Name the cosmetic face and show the required visible grain direction on the released drawing. Tie it to a part feature that survives forming, rather than an ambiguous instruction such as “lengthwise.”

For a multi-panel housing, review grain in the assembled orientation. A side panel and top cover may be cut from the same sheet but appear different when their final positions are considered. If matching across a seam is required, identify the mating parts and the accepted relationship.

Do not assume the visual brushing direction is a complete statement about rolling direction, material properties or bending suitability. Those are separate inputs to the fabrication review.

Keep measured texture separate from a finish name

If a numerical surface-texture requirement is needed, specify the parameter, limit, measurement locations and agreed method. The responsible quality team should also establish the instrument settings and conditions needed to interpret the result.

Do not convert a finish designation into a universal measured value. The final fabrication and finishing sequence can change the surface from its supplied sheet condition, especially near bends, welds and blended areas.

Likewise, a measured result at one accessible location does not automatically describe every returned edge or internal corner. Define the relevant zones and sampling scope instead of extending one reading across the entire part.

Use cosmetic zones to avoid all-or-nothing language

A visible front face, hidden mounting flange and internal bracket do not necessarily need the same cosmetic standard. Mark the zones and define the applicable acceptance criteria.

For a front cover, an OEM may want an agreed appearance reference across the main face while allowing a defined transition on the hidden return. Another product may require the return to remain visible. Neither decision should be assumed by the fabricator.

Explain how scratches, handling marks and local blending will be reviewed. A phrase such as “perfect finish” offers no reproducible acceptance method and can turn a supplier discussion into a subjective disagreement.

Coordinate grain with weld and bend transitions

Before release, inspect the surfaces that change orientation or receive secondary work. A blended weld can interrupt the original grain, and a folded return may need a different access route for finishing.

Ask the supplier to identify any zone that cannot meet the requested appearance using the proposed sequence. Resolve whether the design, finish boundary or accepted reference should change. Do not approve a sample and then leave the production drawing unchanged.

The weld cleanup acceptance guide addresses the seam itself. Here the key question is how that seam joins the rest of the visible panel in the final assembly.

Approve the condition that will actually be delivered

Specify whether inspection occurs before or after the final treatment and whether temporary protection is removed for the agreed review. Where two panels are assessed together, use the approved mating orientation.

If electropolishing or another surface-changing operation is considered, assess its effect on the requested appearance rather than assuming the pre-process sample remains representative. Keep the treatment decision connected to the final drawing requirement.

Do not infer cleanability, sterility or medical-device approval from a low roughness value or a uniform brushed appearance. Those equipment requirements need their own applicable validation.

A concise drawing-note package

For short flanges, outside bends and weld-adjacent areas, add a roughness measurement access plan. Mark the actual acceptance regions and resolve inaccessible locations before inspection begins.

Release the cosmetic-face map, grain references, any measured texture requirement, approved appearance reference, final inspection state and protection instructions. Link them to the same part revision as the dimensional drawing.

This lets the fabricator distinguish a visual direction requirement from a measured surface requirement and quote the appropriate review. It also preserves the approved expectation for repeat batches instead of relying on memory of a sample viewed under different conditions.
