Formed straps secured cables and pipework using closely spaced holes and controlled edges.
The customer’s challenge
Hole-spacing error, burrs and distortion after bending caused poor fit and cable abrasion.
Material and fabrication route
0.5 mm 301 stainless steel; 1.0 mm 7075 aluminum.
Process route: Precision stamping → deburring → hole inspection → edge inspection → finishing.
Manufacturing changes
Progressive tooling controlled the hole pattern, edge polishing removed burrs and post-forming correction restored the final geometry.
Engineering analysis
The strap combined many small locating features with surfaces close to cables. Hole position alone would not resolve the customer’s problem if forming distorted the pattern or left sharp edges. The tooling, polishing and post-forming correction addressed those separate requirements. The hole and burr results should therefore be read together when assessing whether the finished strap fits and protects its routed components.
Inspection and project results
The accepted straps reached ±0.02 mm hole-position accuracy and ≤0.01 mm burr height without the earlier hole distortion.
| Project measurement or production detail | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Hole-position accuracy | ±0.02 mm |
| Edge burr | ≤0.01 mm |
| Holes per part | ≥50 |
| Optical inspection | 100% |
These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.
Planning a similar OEM component
A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:
- Hole pattern and positional datums.
- Cable-contact edge requirements.
- Formed shape and mounting interface.
- Material-specific finishing requirements.
Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
