Thin formed components supplied shielding and internal structure for aerospace equipment.
The customer’s challenge
Wrinkling, springback and surface damage made thin-sheet dimensions inconsistent.
Material and fabrication route
0.3–0.8 mm 5052 aluminum.
Process route: Blanking → stamping → deburring → anodizing → dimensional inspection → nondestructive testing.
Manufacturing changes
Revised tooling clearances, a polyurethane die arrangement, springback compensation and controlled handling improved forming.
Engineering analysis
Thin-sheet forming quality depends on the final surface and geometry together. A dimensionally acceptable component may still be unsuitable if wrinkles, scratches or edge damage remain in a functional area. The recorded changes connect die support and springback compensation with handling controls, while dimensional and penetrant inspections address different acceptance questions. This distinction is useful when specifying thin shielding or internal structural parts.
Inspection and project results
The accepted parts had no reported wrinkles or scratches and met ±0.05 mm dimensional tolerance.
| Project measurement or production detail | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Sheet thickness | 0.3–0.8 mm |
| Dimensional tolerance | ±0.05 mm |
| Penetrant inspection | 100% |
These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.
Planning a similar OEM component
A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:
- Formed geometry and bend radii.
- Cosmetic and functional surface zones.
- Dimensional inspection datums.
- Penetrant inspection coverage.
Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
