The customer’s challenge

Inconsistent mounting datums left sensor faces out of plane, complicated calibration and allowed movement after vibration.

Material and fabrication route

2.0 mm aluminum; 1.5 mm steel brackets.

Process route: Laser cutting → bending → welding → anodizing / powder coating → assembly → inspection.

Manufacturing changes

A unified mounting plane and coordinated machining of the sensor hole pattern established common references. Damped mounting seats limited vibration transfer.

Engineering analysis

The important interface was not simply the overall frame size. Lidar and camera mounts needed a shared geometric reference so their relationship remained predictable during calibration. Coordinated machining addressed relative position, while the damped seats addressed movement transmitted through the platform. These were complementary changes: a precise hole pattern would not by itself explain vibration stability, and damping would not correct inconsistent mounting datums.

Inspection and project results

Sensor mounting faces reached ≤0.1 mm coplanarity. Calibration passed on the first attempt and the assembly remained stable in operation.

These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.

Planning a similar OEM component

A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:

  • Sensor mounting drawings and datums.
  • Coplanarity and hole-position acceptance.
  • Cable and calibration access.
  • Vibration conditions for the complete module.

Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
