Thin metal shields enclosed telecom modules with low-resistance contacts to the PCB.
The customer’s challenge
Poor contact, unwanted solder wicking and shield distortion reduced shielding performance.
Material and fabrication route
0.2 mm nickel silver; 0.3 mm tin-plated steel.
Process route: Stamping → bending → deburring → tin plating → shielding tests → inspection.
Manufacturing changes
Revised spring-contact geometry, controlled plating and stiffening features maintained contact pressure and shape.
Engineering analysis
The shielding result depended on reliable contact with the PCB as well as the formed cover shape. Spring geometry and controlled plating addressed contact behavior, while stiffening addressed distortion. The attenuation figure is tied to the stated frequency range and tested shield arrangement. It should not be read as a general enclosure rating independent of the board, contacts and installation details.
Inspection and project results
The tested shield arrangement achieved ≥60 dB attenuation over 1–6 GHz, with sound contact and no observed solder-wicking problem.
| Project measurement or production detail | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Shielding effectiveness | ≥60 dB at 1–6 GHz |
| Contact resistance | ≤50 mΩ |
| Sheet thickness | 0.2–0.3 mm |
| Production quantity | 500,000 parts/month |
These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.
Planning a similar OEM component
A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:
- PCB contact and locating layout.
- Shield height and shape limits.
- Plating and solder interfaces.
- Required frequency band and test arrangement.
Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
