High-volume stamped components supplied industrial equipment assemblies.

The customer’s challenge

Burrs, dimensional variation and premature tool wear caused batch quality fluctuations.

Material and fabrication route

0.5–2.0 mm SPCC, SECC and 304 stainless steel.

Process route: Progressive stamping → deburring → finishing → inspection and packing.

Manufacturing changes

Revised progressive tooling, improved die steel, in-process inspection and statistical process control stabilized production.

Engineering analysis

This was a batch-consistency problem, not simply a first-piece dimensional issue. Tooling changes addressed the source of variation, while in-process inspection and statistical monitoring addressed ongoing production. The reported Cpk concerns the characteristics monitored in this project; it is not a site-wide capability value for every dimension. Tool-life and monthly quantity describe different aspects of the production record.

Inspection and project results

The project achieved burr height ≤0.02 mm and dimensional Cpk ≥1.33, with the stated tool-life result.

These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.

Planning a similar OEM component

A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:

  • Critical dimensions and burr limits.
  • Material and finishing requirements.
  • Capability-study characteristics.
  • Volume, tooling and inspection responsibilities.

Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
