TC4 titanium formed components served high-temperature applications around aerospace equipment.

The customer’s challenge

Cold-forming springback and weld oxidation threatened dimensional stability and fatigue behavior.

Material and fabrication route

1.0–2.0 mm TC4 titanium.

Process route: Laser cutting → hot forming → welding → pickling → annealing → dimensional inspection → nondestructive testing.

Manufacturing changes

Hot forming, argon-protected welding, controlled surface removal and vacuum annealing addressed the material-processing problems.

Engineering analysis

The process addressed forming behavior and weld protection separately. Hot forming dealt with springback, while shielding and subsequent surface treatment addressed the welded condition. Vacuum annealing formed part of the reported route before final acceptance. The temperature and inspection figures concern the supplied component configuration; they should not be interpreted as an unrestricted operating qualification for every titanium part.

Inspection and project results

The project achieved ±0.1 mm forming accuracy without observed weld oxidation and met its reported fatigue acceptance requirement.

These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.

Planning a similar OEM component

A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:

  • Formed geometry and material condition.
  • Welding and shielding requirements.
  • Heat-treatment and surface-removal scope.
  • Dimensional and nondestructive acceptance.

Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
