Formed heat shields and their welding fixtures served a high-temperature industrial-furnace application.
The customer’s challenge
Springback, weld cracking and thermal distortion impaired the original shields and shortened fixture life.
Material and fabrication route
1.5 mm Inconel 625.
Process route: Laser cutting → hot forming → TIG welding → solution treatment → dimensional inspection → high-temperature testing.
Manufacturing changes
Hot forming, lower heat-input welding, solution treatment and revised geometry reduced forming and thermal stresses.
Engineering analysis
The shield’s behavior during forming and joining had to be considered alongside its high-temperature use. Hot forming and lower welding heat input addressed process-related distortion, while the treatment and geometry changes addressed the supplied condition. The published temperature and dimensional results describe this shield arrangement. Buyers should keep the test condition, material specification and inspection coverage together when evaluating a comparable furnace component.
Inspection and project results
The project achieved ±0.2 mm forming accuracy with no reported weld cracks or deformation in its 1,000°C test condition.
| Project measurement or production detail | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Temperature test | ≥1,000°C |
| Forming accuracy | ±0.2 mm |
| Penetrant inspection | 100% |
These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.
Planning a similar OEM component
A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:
- Heat-shield geometry and interfaces.
- Operating and test temperature conditions.
- Weld and heat-treatment requirements.
- Forming and penetrant acceptance.
Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
