The cooling plate removed heat from a robot joint motor during sustained high-load operation.

The customer’s challenge

Uneven coolant flow created local temperature differences while the motor overheated under sustained load.

Material and fabrication route

1.0 mm 304 stainless steel.

Process route: Laser cutting → channel milling → friction-stir sealing → pressure testing → surface finishing.

Manufacturing changes

Flow-path analysis balanced distribution. The plate was sealed and the motor-contact face finish-machined to improve thermal contact.

Engineering analysis

The cold plate’s result depended on coolant distribution and physical contact with the motor. Flow-path changes addressed local temperature differences, while finish machining addressed the contact face. Pressure testing addressed a separate containment requirement. The temperature-rise and variation results therefore describe the configured motor-and-cooling arrangement and need the stated flow and interface conditions to be useful in a new comparison.

Inspection and project results

The tested motor assembly recorded temperature rise ≤30 K, temperature variation ≤2 K and no leakage.

These figures describe the project configuration and production scope above. Dimensional, material and production details are identified separately from performance tests. For a new order, the inspection method and acceptance criteria should be agreed against the released drawings.

Planning a similar OEM component

A useful RFQ for this application should make the following interfaces and acceptance requirements clear:

  • Motor contact geometry.
  • Coolant flow and operating temperatures.
  • Plate pressure and leak-test requirements.
  • Thermal-contact and temperature-uniformity criteria.

Include the current drawing revision, mating-component information, quantities and required delivery sequence. Identifying unresolved requirements at quotation stage helps distinguish fabrication work from the equipment-level checks that the project needs.
