02 / Technical Capabilities

Mechanical Features for NEMA & UL Programs

These are common customer targets, not DRAmetal product ratings. The OEM, panel builder or test body owns final validation, marking and listing.

Customer Rating Targets NEMA 1, 3R, 4, 4X or 12 as defined by the OEM drawing and validation plan
Standards UL 50 / UL 50E / UL 508A-related mechanical details only when specified by the OEM
Materials Carbon steel, 304 / 316 stainless steel, aluminum
Gauge Custom — typically 14–11 ga to application
Finish ANSI 61 gray powder coat (standard); #4 brushed for stainless 4X
Sealing Closed-cell gasket and compression details to the released drawing
Grounding Grounding studs on body and door as defined by the OEM or panel builder
Doors & Latching Single / double, hinged, lockable; multi-point latching
Back Panels Powder-coated white steel sub-panels, sized to opening
Customization Non-standard sizes, cutouts, knockouts, glands, HVAC openings
03 / Manufacturing Process

From Sheet to Finished Enclosure

Our process delivers enclosure metalwork to the released drawing. Final environmental rating and system suitability require OEM or laboratory validation.

01

Laser Cutting

Precision cutting of body, door, and back-panel blanks, plus cutouts, knockouts, and mounting holes to your layout.

02

Bending & Forming

CNC press-brake bending of the enclosure body and door to precise dimensions and clean, consistent corners.

03

Welding & Seams

Welded seams, leg kits and reinforcements made to drawing-defined sealing and structural details for the customer's target environment.

04

Hardware Insertion

Grounding studs, PEM fasteners, hinges, latches, and collar studs installed for door, panel, and mounting.

05

Powder Coating

Surface prep and ANSI 61 gray powder coat (or your color); brushed #4 finish for stainless 4X enclosures.

06

Gasket & Assembly

Gasket application, door and hardware assembly, back panel fit, and final QC against rating and dimensions.

04 / Material Options

The Right Material for the Environment

Material choice drives both cost and corrosion resistance. Here's how the three families compare for electrical enclosures.

Carbon Steel

The cost-effective standard for indoor Type 1/12 applications. Powder coating provides an attractive finish and basic protection.

  • Corrosion Basic (coated)
  • Cost Lowest
  • Best for Indoor, controlled environments

304 / 316 Stainless

Excellent corrosion resistance for harsh, washdown, or outdoor environments. 316 for chloride/coastal exposure; 304 for general corrosion.

  • Corrosion Excellent
  • Finish #4 brushed (4X)
  • Best for Washdown, outdoor, NEMA 4X

Aluminum

Lightweight with natural corrosion resistance. Suitable where weight reduction matters or specific grounding requirements exist.

  • Corrosion Good (natural)
  • Weight Lightest
  • Best for Weight-sensitive, outdoor

05 / Why It Matters

The Enclosure Protects Equipment — and People

An electrical enclosure isn't just a box. It protects equipment from the environment, protects operators from electrical hazards, and is often what an inspector signs off on before a system can be energized.

Rating Gates Approval

For control panels, the enclosure's NEMA/UL rating is what the inspection authority checks. The right rating, gasket, and grounding are what let a system pass inspection and energize.

Environment Drives Material

Indoor, washdown, coastal, or outdoor — each demands a different material and rating. Material, pretreatment and finish must be matched to the environment. Service life remains a buyer-defined target validated by the OEM or responsible test party.

Fit Saves Field Time

Correct cutouts, back-panel layout, and mounting provisions mean the panel builder drops components straight in — no field rework, no delays.

Grounding Is Safety

Grounding studs on body and door aren't optional on rated enclosures — they're a core operator-safety requirement we build in to spec.

09 / FAQ

Electrical Enclosure FAQ

Can you support NEMA rating targets?

We can fabricate gasket, grounding, seam and finish details from an OEM drawing targeting NEMA 1, 3R, 4, 4X or 12. DRAmetal does not assign the final rating; the OEM or test body validates it.

Are your enclosures UL 508A compatible?

We fabricate customer-released mechanical details used in UL-related panel programs. UL certification documentation is available on request for applicable products and components; confirm the model and listing scope for your project. The panel builder, OEM and NRTL retain responsibility for final panel testing and listing.

Which material should I choose?

Carbon steel for indoor Type 1/12; 304 stainless for general corrosion/washdown; 316 stainless for coastal/chloride or aggressive environments; aluminum where weight matters. We'll recommend based on your environment and budget.

Can you cut custom holes and knockouts?

Yes — we laser-cut cutouts, knockouts, gland holes, HVAC openings, and any custom features to your component and cable layout, so the panel drops in without field modification.

Do you provide back panels and mounting hardware?

Yes — powder-coated steel back/sub-panels sized to the opening, plus grounding studs, hinges, latches, and leg kits as needed. Tell us your layout and we build it complete.

What's your minimum order quantity?

We handle everything from prototype quantities to high-volume production runs. Send us your requirements and we'll confirm MOQ and pricing for your specific enclosure.
