03 / Manufacturing Process

From Sheet to Street-Ready Cabinet

Our integrated process delivers EVSE enclosures that hold their rating, manage heat, resist vandals, and survive years outdoors.

01

Laser Cutting

Precision cutting of body, door, and panel blanks, plus cable entries, display windows, and louver patterns to your charger layout.

02

Bending & Forming

CNC press-brake forming of the cabinet body and door to precise dimensions and clean, consistent corners.

03

Welding & Sealing

Continuous seam welds and precise gasket channels — the construction that holds NEMA 3R/4X and survives independent lab testing.

04

Thermal & Hardware

Louvers with weather baffles, fan/heat-exchanger mounts, gland plates, locks, hinges, and ground studs installed to your spec.

05

Powder Coating

Pretreatment, powder specification, UV requirement and any salt-spray method or duration are buyer-defined. Evidence must come from the responsible processor or test party when included in the RFQ.

06

Assembly & QC

Gasket and hardware assembly, IP leak test, dimensional check, and cosmetic inspection before export packaging.

04 / Material Options

Material Matched to the Deployment

Where the charger lives drives the material choice. Here's how the options compare for EVSE enclosures.

Carbon Steel (powder-coated)

The cost-effective standard for most deployments — strong, economical, and well-protected by marine-grade outdoor powder coat.

  • Cost Lowest
  • Strength High
  • Best for General outdoor, coated

304 / 316 Stainless

For corrosive and coastal sites — 316 for salt/chloride exposure (highways, coastal), 304 for general corrosion resistance. NEMA 4X capable.

  • Corrosion Excellent
  • Rating NEMA 4X
  • Best for Coastal, highway, harsh

Aluminum

Lightweight with natural corrosion resistance — useful where weight matters (wall-mount) or for a cleaner thermal profile.

  • Weight Lightest
  • Corrosion Good (natural)
  • Best for Wall-mount, weight-sensitive

05 / Why It Matters

The Enclosure Protects a $10,000+ Charger

An EV charger cabinet isn't just a shell — it's a dynamic thermal environment protecting high-value electronics from weather, heat, and vandals, often on a public street for a decade. Four things make or break it.

Thermal Management Is Survival

High-amperage charging generates immense heat — DC cabinet air can hit 60–70 °C. Trap that heat and the electronics throttle, degrade, and fail. Engineered louvers and airflow keep the hardware alive.

Weatherproofing Without Trapping Heat

The hard part: keep rain and dust out (NEMA 3R/4X) while letting heat escape. Louvers with internal weather baffles solve both — sealed to the rating, ventilated for cooling.

Anti-Vandal Is Mandatory

Public chargers get attacked. IK10 impact resistance and tamper-resistant locking protect the high-value electronics from vandalism and theft — a core requirement, not an extra.

Mechanical Features Affect Testing

Continuous welds, gasket channels and material thickness are built to the released OEM design. The complete EVSE still requires OEM-managed laboratory testing; DRAmetal does not guarantee certification.

09 / FAQ

EV Charger Enclosure FAQ

What NEMA/IP rating do EV charger enclosures need?

For outdoor chargers, NEMA 3R (with ice protection) is a common minimum; NEMA 4/4X for harsher or corrosive/coastal sites, with IP54/65 (up to IP66 on request). We build to the rating your deployment environment requires.

Can you handle the thermal management for DC fast chargers?

Yes — DC fast charging generates significant heat (cabinet air can reach 60–70 °C). We CNC-punch engineered louvers with internal weather baffles and provide mounting for fans and heat exchangers, so the enclosure cools the electronics while staying weatherproof.

Are your enclosures UL certified?

UL certification documentation is available on request for applicable products and components. Confirm the exact enclosure model and listing scope for your project. We fabricate customer-released mechanical features such as seam welds and gasket channels. The EVSE OEM and accredited laboratory own the finished- unit test, certification and labeling.

Do you build anti-vandal enclosures?

Yes — IK10 impact resistance (IK08 for ventilation louvers), tamper-resistant hardware, and lockable doors protect the high-value electronics from vandalism and theft on public installations.

Which material should I choose?

Powder-coated carbon steel for cost-effective general outdoor use; 316 stainless for coastal/highway (salt); aluminum where weight matters (wall-mount). We'll recommend based on your site and budget.

What's your minimum order quantity?

We support everything from a single prototype to high-volume rollouts. Send us your charger model and requirements and we'll confirm MOQ and pricing for your project.
